The story takes us deep into the 1960's, when big tits reigned supreme and if you didn't have a big hair dome you might as well be dead.

Today I went through the boxes that house my paper collection, on the hunt for several really weird comics that I've never scanned before. When I moved it was such a rush that I had to just pile my paper collection up and hope it all ended up in the same zip code, so I had my romance collection scattered over several different boxes and in between my modern comics or my magazines.

I was searching for one comic in particular, it's a mega-sized DC issue that has about 10 stories. In the story I am going to scan the heroine is (unfairly) accused of being a lesbian. It's not even subtle or veiled, the cover touts it as "The story they dared us to print!" and it shows a girl talking to a boy while she points to a second girl, saying "Oh, don't bother with her, she doesn't like boys. If you know what I mean." So that's pretty blatant. Of course you read it hoping the girl's a lesbian, and when it turns out that she's just a tomboy it's kind of disappointing. Even if it was controversial to even hint at the idea of lesbianism in the 70's it's just not enough. It makes you want to blank out the dialogue and fix the story.

My internet is so slow today, it's ridiculous. I shall blame the rain.

Did I ever mention my red hat pirate doll? She's new on the Etsy store, and she's the last of my Randy Lambert dolls so I'm feeling sentimental about her and her resin perfection. Resin is actually really nice to paint on, and since I didn't have to actually sculpt the doll I could spend much more time decorating and painting her. Red Hat has some pretty groovy detailing going on, if I do say so myself.

Hot weather tires Hazel out, so lately she's been chilling out on the bench next to me, snoring and munching air in contentment. I had to put Chap-Stick on her nose earlier, and she was pretty disgruntled by it. The sounds of her peevishly licking the Chap-Stick off her nose was pretty funny, and later I gave her a bite of stale croissant to keep up her spirits.

I've decided that I'm going to update Romanceville on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays. I updated on Monday and I have Wednesday's post waiting in the wings, so we'll see how this schedule goes. Scanning the stories isn't too bad, but color correcting them can be a nightmare, since even the best comics were printed on really cheap paper that has slowly turned nicotine orange. I think I need a new scanner, as well, since mine seems to be losing its focus in places.

So, go on and read the MUCHACHO story! I was going to post it much sooner, but getting home at 7:30/8pm really put a damper on your energy. I'm so tired! Last night I didn't have the energy to boil water for spaghetti and just made myself a lukewarm meatball sandwich for dinner.

I've been busy making fancy dolls, and I have three new dolls up. I seem to only make fancy dolls anymore, dolls that take me way too many hours to make. There are three new dolls today, but I updated about 10 days ago and never mentioned it, so you might've missed my green dreadlocks doll and some others.

My favorite is the Marie Antoinette doll. I've been wanting to do an 18th century doll for months, a combination of seeing these fantastic ballet/theater costumes that totally inspired me and the Marie Antoinette biography I read which led me to looking at her portraits online. The costumes were a Victorian take on 18th century France, so it gets a little convoluted when I try to explain it, but they're very frilly and ribbony and everyone has big hair.

It's cold here today.

It's called Rabbit Rescue, starring Amy Sedaris and about a dozen rabbits in a cupcake shop. It's a commercial for Office 2007, but the first half is just bunnies and Amy Sedaris. Look for the bunny that taps on the bell repeatedly and the one typing like mad on the keyboard... hysterical.

Pomeranians for Sale

On the way to work, there is a house that has Pomeranian puppies for sale. I pass this sign twice every day. It makes me feel certain feelings.

They are unwise feelings, but I feel them. Feel them so hard.

Every day when we drive past the sign, I glance over at Amy and she glances over at me and then she says, in a very firm voice, "NO."

I laugh but then sometimes try to wheedle her. "I just want to go look at them," I lie. Amy is not fooled. "What if they're irresistible?" she asks.

Dang, how do I answer that? You know the damn things would be irresistible. I'd get in the house determined to be a looky-lou and indulge in some puppy-sniffin', then I'd see one of the fuzzballs and BAM! I'd be washing the poop from a Pomeranian's butt with a moist towelette every day for the next 20 years. All because I couldn't resist a sign.

Baroo.

Goodbye shopping cart hello Etsy bandwagon

I've been using my Etsy store as my site for the past two or so weeks. My web provider had been laggy for over 6 months and it was time to cut my ties with them. I figured that just directing my site to Etsy would be easier (and cheaper) and more convenient for people to buy from, rather than navigating the groaningly slow site.

I've been branching out lately, doing dolls that are a bit more elaborate than usual. I fell back in love with crackling and so each doll gets a coat of gesso, then white paint, then crackle, then antique, then a sealer. It takes a much longer time but I love the richness of the delicate crackling and the depth of the antique. So that's kind of re-inspired me to take a look at my stuff and make it a bit more involved.

I love the blue-haired girl above, I thought she would sell right away but what did sell was the doll that ended up reminding me of Lisa. Whenever I make a doll that reminds me of someone (last time it was Soren) that doll is bought very quickly, I don't know why. The blue-haired girl had one long tendril that I didn't want to snip off, so I got the iron and steamed off my fingerprints ironing the tendril into a smooth dreadlock. It made me want to be all Libby and make dreadlocks for my dolls. Maybe I'll do that.

Then there are the fairy tale dolls (Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland) that I'm really into. I was pretty dedicated to fairy tales as a little girl, and I was always hunting out more fairy tales, except for Hans Christian Anderson, I always thought his stories were so sad I almost couldn't stand it. I still have an extremely antique copy of Grimms Fairy Tales that I was given in third grade, a book that my brothers covered with grafitti and which (miraculously) survived their phase of burning my books to start fires in the family fireplace. So making Cinderella and Alice was really rewarding, I'm going to work on Snow White and Rose Red as a set next. This Snow White isn't related to the other Snow White with the dwarves and the huntsman, she's just got a sister and a bear in her story and only shares a name.

Okay so ... off to work. My head hurts today.

Amy made a hat for Hazel today (it's part of paper cup covered with cloth) and we stuffed her into the light tent to take pictures. We took turn trying to get Hazel to sit while one of us took the pictures, but everytime I glanced into the viewfinder I laughed so hard I was practically in tears.

Hazel was not amused, not even when she was given morsels of baked potato as a reward for sitting still for 5 seconds together.

One of the Writer's Block prompts I saw when I signed in to LJ just now was "When did you stop believing in Santa Claus, and why?"

That's fuckin' deep.

This is just a quick post to let everyone know that my comp is in several boxes and I won't have internet services (except when I sneak to Amy's office) for like a week. A WEEK! I am more disturbed by lack of internet than I am by anything else. Plus most of that week is a holiday, which is worse because there's nothing to do but set up the horrible mountain of boxes that is my new living space.

Okay, so that's the news. I can't think about my poor apartment very long without feeling like I'm going to start hyperventilating. Where to start? I guess the 50 cigarette butts and dirt in both my tub and my kitchen sink (and garbage disposal) is a good place to start. Stupid maintenance men.

Oh I came here to get my digital camera and I am taking pictures of everything that's amiss, and emailing them to the manager.

I am going to be the tentant from hell.

You can't compete with a Simon and Garfunkel LP? That's ... embarassing.

This is another story by the dream team at Marvel's "My Love". You'll see the yesterday's inferior story was no fluke - Stan Lee and the gang just can't seem to muster up any enthusiasm for the job, and the stories are abrupt and silly. Our heroine at least is more likeable than yesterday's odious Val, but she's too weepy.

My Love's stories run a skimpy 6 pages compared to the industry standard of 8 pages, with the missing pages devoted to ads for GRIT, Charles Atlas bodybuilding kits, and coupons for discounted baby racoons. Not only does this force people to fall in and out of love within the space of three panels, but there isn't a pimple cream, wig, Bobby Sherman poster or feminine odor product being advertised anywhere! Marvel was most definitely not in touch with its audience, and not a value in romance comics.

In this story, Kitt has to choose between her love of music and her love of the impatient Mike Martin. She chooses her music but resigns herself to a loveless, joyless life even as her music tops the charts - rock music's first (and only) nun.

Edit: I contacted the guy who made the video, and he said it's Puppy Love by Sunnie Lee. I guess it's an obscure oldie, the only place he knows to get the song is a compilation album called Candy Doll. So I have to order that.

My mother brought a little antique book called Birds Every Child Should Know to the studio a few days ago. I keep turning to it when I'm distracted and the text always makes me laugh, check out this description of the Mourning Dove:

Do not waste any sympathy on this incessant love-maker that slowly sings coo-o-o, ah-coo-o-o-ooo-o-o in a sweetly sad voice. Really he is no more melancholy than the plaintive pewee but, on the contrary, is so happy in his love that his devotion has passed into proverb. Nevertheless, the song he sings his "turtle-dove" sounds more like a dirge than a rapture.While she lives, there is no more contented bird in the woods.

I always did think Mourning Doves were sad! It turns out they're just little horndogs. Later on, she mentions the doves' nest:

Only the cuckoo of our common birds builds so flimsy a nest as the dove's adored darling. I am sorry to tell you she is a slack, incompetent housekeeper, but evidently her lover is blind to every fault.

Amy made her own take on the Luna Lovegood radish earrings, and I think they're darling. She made the first pair for me, but she's made others and I'm going to be listing them on Etsy soon. I thought I'd post them here first in case anyone on my friend's list wanted a pair.

They're 2" long, made from polymer clay and sterling findings. The stem is made from imported seed beads. The pictures aren't too great, since I need to take my light tent to work with me, but if you ignore the harsh highlights (dang) the colors are accurate.

Amy doesn't use any paint in her polymer work (it's like a polymer faux pas to use paint) and all of the color work (the veins in the leaves, the gradient in the radish) is done by polymer work and is all mysterious and otherworldly... do not offend the polymer gods and use paint!

I don't have a picture of the earrings hanging from someone's ear, because Amy and I both refused to have our ears showcased.Let me know if you think that a model shot is needed.

The earrings are $18 a pair if you are interested.

selling moving la la la

I'm moving somewhere new, a fact which I know has you all riveted to your seats, furiously refreshing your browser in the hopes that I've updated your Friend's List with my complaints. I'm moving! Waaah!

I'm selling things for all of the following stereotypical reasons (people who are in the process of moving are all the same):

1.) I need money to cover the cost of moving;
2.) I need money to buy a second-hand couch that probably ranks urine as the least offensive of the various secretions on it;
3.) I'm losing a little over 600 sq ft in this move and can't even begin to bring everything with me.

Right now I'm selling off most of my vintage magazine/paper ephemera collection, you can see it at my Etsy store. I've divided it into 10 lots of random assorted papers and old magazines and vintage things, and I made sure that each lot is gorgeous and filled with rare paper treasures.

I wouldn't sell my paper ephemera and things if I wasn't so concerned about storage space and the fact that I think these lots really need to go to collage artists, who will be able to really appreciate and utilize them. If you know anyone who likes to make collages, you could buy them one.

I'm also selling paintings, a magic markers and colored pencils lot, and some stuff on Ebay. The stuff on Ebay doesn't have any bids which kind of puzzles me because I am selling this treasure:

Haha! Yes. A Darth Maul backpack. How is nobody bidding on this? I guess $20 is way too much.

I carried Darth Maul around during my college days (I was an older student) and it never failed to crack me up when I got ready for school. It was usually some stuffy literature class that took itself far too seriously. I eventually switched to a Mickey's Big Mouth backpack that had more carrying room. I'd sent away for it using a coupon printed on a case of Mickey's, and it was funny how people reacted to the backpack, either it made them really thirsty or they were slightly horrified about it.

Man, now I want a Mickey's... or an apple martini and maybe a cigarette. Moving has made me tense and wanting a cigarette really badly, but I'm fighting the urge. I could drive to the convenience store and smoke some Marlboro's right now.

Anyway I'll be listing more stuff later, I have some fancy things I think need to be purged too.

Kitties Need Your Help!

I'm reposting this from a friend's journal, since I know that a great many of the people on my friend's list are animal lovers and will donate to a worthy cause.

The Wayside park in Gulf Breeze, Florida is just over the Pensacola Bay Bridge and for years it has been home to a colony of cats. People fish there so I guess that's what originally attracted the cats. And then people started abandoning their unwanted cats out there to fend for themselves. So for years these cats have been there, somehow surviving the hurricanes. But now the Gulf Breeze City Council has decided that they must go.

Three weeks ago they announced that on July 1, Escambia County Animal Control will begin trapping and destroying these cats. They've been deemed "feral" so they won't be eligible for adoption through the shelter. So a friend of mine has been working very hard to find homes for them. So about a dozen of us have pitched in and I have temporarily dedicated my website for the cause. I bought a new domain name so you can find our site at http://www.waysidecats.com. Right now about 20 of them have been rescued, but there are at least 20 more out there. We have a City Council meeting next week and we're pleading with them for more time.

So I'm hoping you can take a minute to check out my website and take a look at these beautiful cats. And if you can donate a few dollars we will be so grateful and so will the kitties! 100% of the money we collect is going for vaccinations, feline aids/leukemia testing, spays & neuters and food. We want to be able to give these cats the health care they need before we relocate them to their new homes.

And I'd really appreciate if you can post a link to the site in your journals. Every little bit helps and time is running out.

So I thought I would let you know.

1" painted pendant, much smaller in real life than it would appear here jumbo-sized.
The detail is astonishing.
Yes, I paint with a brush with only one hair from a spider-monkey's tail.

Edit: I accidentally checked off the comments feature, silly. Plus the business about the details was just me making a joke, I hate when my work is blown up when it's actually so tiny, so the pendants look much better in person. I need a hot chick to model a sample one for me.

I've put a new doll on my website, this big pirate captain girl (over 10" tall):

I also put two dolls on my Etsy store, and a bunch of these little pendants I made. They're basically things and themes that I would paint on my doll's bodices. I'm happy with them, though I probably should've taken a picture of the pendants against skin, but I didn't want to wrestle Amy away from WoW.
